extremely useful system #0 – hanger | 終極有用系統 #0 – 衣架 exhibiting at Videotage in NEW PLATFORM - Alternative ASIA: mind the _____

Videotage is pleased to participate in NEW PLATFORM – Alternative Asia, presented by Art Center NEW in Japan. As Art Center NEW’s first art expo centred on Asia, the event will feature 31 alternative art spaces and collectives from East and Southeast Asia, showcasing their collaborative, experimental and innovative ideas.

“mind the ____” — a ubiquitous reminder in notices. What else would art practitioners be ‘mindful’ of? Under the theme mind the _____, our showcase intentionally leaves the daily reminders blank and invites visitors to explore the details that often go unnoticed.

The theme also reflects how artists, through time-based practices, respond to their surroundings—whether through encounters with unexpected sights during their journeys, stock materials circulating online, a corner of the city, or the movement sparked by circuit components. Each of these fragments can serve as a point of departure for creation. When contemplated closely, these practices form a collective portrait that highlights the medium’s experimental and multifaceted nature.

We will feature the moving image and installation works by nine Hong Kong artists, which are available for acquisition. Also on view will be the installation works by Netherlands-based artist Janne Schimmel, developed during his three-month residency in Hong Kong. Proceeds from the showcase will support Videotage’s publishing initiatives and will also be shared with the participating artists to sustain their future practices.

Footnotes to lingering

In their debut exhibition, artist duo Noisy Plaster (Man Mei-to and Wong Chun-hoi) use "walking" as a starting point to gaze at the faint glowing objects in urban corners and capture the resilience within urban acoustics. With curious footsteps, they navigate between the movements of unnamed objects. Those subtle existences, once overlooked in daily life, become their reasons to pause and stay on this land.
